Custom Metal Assemblies & Weldments in Ontario

WeFab builds custom metal assemblies and weldments in Ontario for industrial, data centre, power, and manufacturing projects, in one piece up to 40 tons, with critical interfaces shop-fit before shipping.

Every project is different, which is why we build assemblies around your requirements rather than relying on standard solutions. Our team fabricates and assembles complete packages designed to integrate seamlessly with your project, reducing installation time and improving overall efficiency.

With design, fabrication, and assembly working together under one roof, we maintain greater control over quality, scheduling, and production. The result is a finished assembly that’s built to specification and ready for delivery.

Custom metal assemblies at WeFab in Leamington, Ontario

What Counts as a Custom Assembly

A custom assembly is a group of cut, formed, and welded parts joined into one unit that ships and sets as a single piece. WeFab designs each assembly around the client’s requirements rather than a catalogue solution, so the frame fits the equipment, site, and install method.

Sub-fabrications become complete assemblies under one roof in a 208,000 sq ft facility.

Weldment: an assembly of individual metal parts permanently joined by welding into one structural unit. Ordering weldments instead of loose parts moves welding off the jobsite and into the shop.

Types of Custom Weldments and Assemblies We Build

WeFab specializes in skid frames, large weldments, structural frames, modular frames, and walkways, fabricated in mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Each is built to the customer’s drawings or to a design package developed by WeFab’s own drafting team in Leamington.

  • Skid frames: equipment bases built as one welded unit
  • Large weldments: one-piece welded assemblies up to 40 tons
  • Structural frames: fabricated to CSA S16
  • Modular frames: broken into modules to the customer’s requirements
  • Walkways: shipped as assemblies rather than loose parts

Skid frame: a welded steel base that lets equipment be lifted, shipped, and positioned as one piece. An accurately built skid keeps mounting points where the equipment supplier expects them.

Assembly Capacity and Specifications

WeFab builds custom assemblies in one piece up to 40 tons, in an 80 ft × 300 ft main bay with 29 ft clear under hook. If it fits through the 13 ft × 16 ft door and onto a truck, it can be built in one piece.

Our Design-Through-Delivery Process

Every custom assembly at WeFab moves through five steps (design, cutting and forming, fit-up and welding, shop fit and inspection, and load-out) inside one Leamington facility, so dimensional decisions made in the 3D model carry straight through to the piece delivered on site.

Step 1: Requirements and design

Clients send drawings, or the drafting team models the assembly in SolidWorks or Tekla through Design & Drafting. Sealed drawings, when needed, are provided through WeFab’s retained licensed structural engineer, typically within two weeks.

Step 2: Cutting and forming

Parts are cut on BLM and Bystronic fiber lasers, BLM tube lasers, and an OMAX waterjet, then formed on Bystronic and BLM press brakes.

Step 3: Fit-up and welding

Assemblies are built in dedicated weld bays served by ten 1,500 lb jib cranes, where 19 welders work 21 MIG, 2 TIG, and 2 laser stations through Welding & Assembly.

Step 4: Shop fit and inspection

All critical interfaces are shop-fit before shipping. Inspection follows the customer’s requirements, with the on-staff Certified Welding Inspector and third-party inspection; NDT is subcontracted. HoloLens 2 model checks are available on demand.

Step 5: Load-out and delivery

The 88,000 lb overhead bridge crane loads trucks, and WeFab’s owned fleet of 4 tractors with flatbed and step-deck trailers delivers to site.

How Integration Reduces Your Labor

Assembling skid frames, walkways, and modular frames in the shop moves fit-up and welding away from the jobsite. Because WeFab shop-fits critical interfaces before shipping, field crews set a finished assembly instead of matching loose parts, which reduces installation time and improves efficiency on site.

Every connection welded in Leamington is one less made at height or in weather, and a single-piece skid or walkway means one lift instead of several. Shipment sequencing runs through Project-Ready Coordination, and installation through Field Installation.

Galvanizing and powder coating are subcontracted; there is no in-house blast or paint booth.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big an assembly can WeFab build in one piece?

If it fits through the shop’s 13 ft wide by 16 ft tall door and onto a truck, WeFab can build it in one piece, up to 40 tons. The standard legal load is 8.5 ft wide, 10 ft tall on a drop deck, and 53 ft long on a flatbed; larger loads need an oversize permit, handled in-house for Ontario.

Are custom assemblies test-fit before they ship?

Yes. All critical interfaces are shop-fit at WeFab before an assembly leaves Leamington. Inspection beyond that follows the customer’s requirements, supported by an on-staff CSA W178.2 Level 1 Certified Welding Inspector, third-party inspection, and subcontracted NDT when the specification calls for it.

What materials does WeFab use for custom weldments?

WeFab fabricates custom weldments and assemblies in mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Welding runs under South Essex Fabricating Inc.’s CWB W47.1 Division 2 certification, Company Code DENDE1, with more than 60 qualified weld procedures and GMAW, MCAW, and SMAW processes.
