Steel field installation at WeFab in Leamington, Ontario

Field Installation Capabilities

Field installation at WeFab covers on-site setting of fabricated steel plus coordination of delivery, sequencing, and installation. Crews are drawn from South Essex Fabricating Inc., which can run up to five concurrent crews.

WeFab is the fabrication division of South Essex Fabricating Inc. (SEF), which has fabricated since 1994. Field crews are SEF resources rather than a separate subcontractor, so shop, trucking, and site teams answer to the same organization. That single chain of responsibility is what keeps a project moving from fabrication through completion instead of stalling at the hand-off between shop and site.

Structural steel erection: the field work of lifting, placing, plumbing, and connecting fabricated steel members into a finished frame. When erection is planned during fabrication, connections, piece marks, and shipments are designed around how the steel will actually go up.

Erection sequence: the planned order in which steel members are lifted and connected on site. Shipping and marking steel to match it means crews set pieces as they arrive instead of sorting a laydown area for the next lift.

Types of Installations We Handle

WeFab field crews install the steel the Leamington shop fabricates (structural steel and fabricated assemblies) for data centre, warehouse and distribution, manufacturing, power and utility, agricultural infrastructure, and heavy-industry projects.

  • Structural steel frames: beams, columns, and bracing for industrial and commercial buildings
  • Stairs, guardrails, and access steel tied into the primary structure

Food processing work is not supported. Galvanizing and powder coating are subcontracted at the shop stage, not handled in the field. The structural steel itself is fabricated in-house through Structural Fabrication.

How Fabrication and Install Coordination Reduces Risk

Because the shop and field crews belong to one organization, WeFab plans fabrication backwards from the erection sequence. Pieces are marked, staged, and shipped in install order, which reduces delays caused by missing, mis-sequenced, or unidentified steel on site.

Step 1: Sequence planning

Shipments are planned to match the site’s install order through Project-Ready Coordination.

Step 2: Marking for the field

Members are dot-peen marked so field erectors match steel to drawing without guesswork. On request, assemblies are checked against their 3D model with HoloLens 2 in the shop before shipment.

Step 3: Staging and load-out

Finished steel is staged in the 70,000 sq ft yard and loaded with the 88,000 lb overhead bridge crane in the order it will be erected.

Step 4: Sequenced delivery

Steel ships on WeFab’s owned flatbed and step-deck fleet, with Ontario oversize-load permits handled in-house and no freight brokers in between, through Logistics.

Step 5: Erection and on-site support

SEF field crews set, connect, and plumb the steel using rigging, lifts, and portable welding equipment supplied to suit the project, coordinating installation with the general contractor’s site schedule.

Why Project Teams Choose WeFab for Steel Erection

WeFab pairs 32 years of SEF fabrication history with an SEF field workforce of 150+ erectors, owned trucking and installation equipment, and current WSIB clearance, so one organization is accountable for steel from the cutting table to the connected frame.

  • Up to five concurrent crews drawn from South Essex Fabricating Inc.
  • One organization for fabrication, delivery, and installation, no hand-off gap between subcontractors
  • Rigging, lifts, and portable welding equipment supplied to suit each project
  • Owned trucking fleet: four tractors, flatbed and step-deck trailers, no freight brokers
  • Shop welding under CWB W47.1 Division 2 (Company Code DENDE1, held by parent company SEF), with a CSA W178.2 Level 1 Certified Welding Inspector on staff
  • WSIB clearance current

Geographic Coverage: Ontario First, US Projects by Arrangement

WeFab field installation covers roughly 500 km of Leamington by default. Our core service area is Windsor-Essex, London, Kitchener-Waterloo, Hamilton, and the Greater Toronto Area, direct from our Leamington shop. US projects are handled by arrangement, with site management provided while local crews install.

WeFab does not field its own installation crews in the United States. The farthest project to date was in Ohio, where WeFab and SEF provided site management while local crews installed the steel. US deliveries are arranged through a customs broker relationship, not a scheduled cross-border lane.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who installs the steel that WeFab fabricates?

Field installation is carried out by crews from South Essex Fabricating Inc., WeFab’s parent company. SEF can run up to five crews at once, so the same organization that fabricates the steel also erects it on site.

How far from Leamington will WeFab send installation crews?

WeFab’s default field coverage is roughly 500 km of Leamington, Ontario, which takes in Windsor-Essex, London, Kitchener-Waterloo, Hamilton, and the Greater Toronto Area. Up to five SEF crews can be on the road at once, supported by WeFab’s owned trucking fleet and in-house Ontario oversize-load permitting.

Does WeFab install steel in the United States?

WeFab does not have US installation crews. For US projects, WeFab can provide site management while local crews install, as on its farthest project to date in Ohio. US steel deliveries are arranged through a customs broker relationship.

Does WeFab bring its own equipment to the job site?

Yes. WeFab field crews bring rigging, lifts, and portable welding equipment sized to each project. The equipment varies with project load, and it travels with the same SEF crews that erect the steel WeFab fabricates in Leamington.
